Day 1 – Cambridge is famous throughout the world for its university which was founded in 1209 and the colleges’ beautiful buildings are an integral part of the city centre. The pretty river Cam flows through Cambridge where you can hire a punt to explore the backs of the colleges and the Bridge of Sighs.
Day 2 – Ely is known as the Ship of the Marshes as the Norman cathedral sits on a mount and was only accessible by boat until the surrounding wetlands were drained in the 17th century. Ely is also an ancient settlement and also houses the Oliver Cromwell museum.
After visiting Ely we drive to nearby Newmarket, home to British horse racing. Whether you’re interested in ‘the sport of Kings’ or not, a tour of the National Stud is fascinating and will give you a chance to see the home of some of the most famous race horses in history.
Day 3 – Today we drive northwards for a guided tour of the pretty town of King’s Lynn which lies near an inlet called the Wash and is an ancient trading town with more listed buildings than anywhere else in the UK. A walk around the town shows us the Trinity Guildhall, historic merchant houses and the Corn Exchange. We then board the coach again to continue to Sandringham, the private estate of the Queen. Regularly used by the royal family, and traditionally for their Christmas holidays, the house and gardens are often open when they are not in residence.
Day 4 – The city of Norwich is the county town of Norfolk and well worth a visit for its historic houses, cobbled streets and Norman castle and cathedral. Norwich is also the gateway to the Broads National Park, a huge area of flatlands criss-crossed by miles of waterways and a haven for birds and wildlife. Take a cruise along the Broads to really appreciate this unique landscape.
